KEY TERMS, EXPLAINED
A short glossary.
Plain definitions of the terms that come up most in finance, trade and insurance conversations.
- Letter of credit (LC)
- A bank’s undertaking to pay a seller when documents that comply with the credit’s terms are presented. Often governed by ICC rules such as UCP 600.
- Bank guarantee (BG)
- A bank’s promise to pay a beneficiary if its customer fails to meet a stated obligation, such as a performance or advance-payment commitment.
- Standby letter of credit (SBLC)
- A credit that the beneficiary draws on only if the applicant defaults. It works as a payment backstop rather than the primary means of payment.
- Working capital
- The cash a business needs to fund inventory and customer credit while it waits to be paid, net of the credit its suppliers allow.
- Cash conversion cycle
- Inventory days plus receivable days minus payable days. A longer cycle ties up more cash in day-to-day operations.
- Debt-service coverage ratio (DSCR)
- Cash available for debt service divided by the principal and interest due in the same period. Lenders use it to judge repayment capacity.
- EMI
- Equated monthly instalment: the fixed monthly payment that repays a reducing-balance loan, covering both interest and principal.
- Loan against property (LAP)
- A secured loan raised against residential or commercial property that the borrower owns, used for personal or business purposes.
- NBFC
- Non-banking financial company: a lender registered with the Reserve Bank of India that provides credit without being a bank.
- SIP
- Systematic investment plan: investing a fixed amount at regular intervals, commonly into mutual funds.
- Insurance broker
- An intermediary that acts for the client: assessing risk, approaching insurers, comparing terms and supporting placement, renewals and claims. In India, brokers are registered with IRDAI.
- Sanction letter
- A lender’s written offer setting out the approved amount, rate, tenure, security and conditions that must be met before disbursement.
